Somerford Primary School is a large school of over 400 pupils situated on the edge of a council estate where there is high level of deprivation and social need. Christchurch, in Dorset, is often seen as an affluent area and Somerford is a tiny pocket within this which can be at times overlooked and misunderstood.
The school has been providing sessions for children with not only learning and sensory difficulties such as Autism and ADHD but also other emotional, social and behavioural problems, and have invested in a dedicated sensory room for this.
The sensory room helps children to build and improve sensory skills, spatial orientation and refocus their concentration. Alongside this imaginative play, language development and behaviour management skills are developed. It is evident that the enjoyment of school and activities outside of the room improves for children who use the room as it provides a moment of calm relaxation and makes a significant improvement to emotional health. However, with an increasing demand on the room and its equipment, the school had a desperate need to replace their tired and broken sensory toys, and we, alongside our fantastic guests, have now been able to provide a grant for £3,413.46 to help them on their way.
By opting to add £1 to your room rate upon check out can really make a difference to a child’s life.
