The Bourne Academy in Bournemouth is based in one of the most deprived areas in the UK, and many of their pupils come from disadvantaged backgrounds. In particular, the school has a high number of vulnerable young people who are suffering emotionally and therefore unable to learn effectively.
We, alongside our fantastic guests, have granted £4,250 to help set up their Sound Training scheme, a connected programme which improves reading ages by an average of 27 months in just six weeks—a pilot programme in the school beat this, improving reading ages by 33.2 months in the same amount of time.
Sound Training offers specialised training for teachers so that students who are falling behind can be coached with vocabulary and literacy skills to equip them to be ready to access the whole curriculum and be well prepared for exams. The package helps select students, train them and track/measure their progress.
Caroline Gobell, on the Parent Voice committee, says that the outcomes of the programme result in so many essential benefits: ‘boosted confidence, grades, opportunities, group work, friendships – it gives an upward spiral of positivity at a crucial time’.
By opting to add £1 to your room rate upon check out can really make a difference to a child’s life.
